Issues with food allergies can be difficult for kids in school. From the lunchroom to the classroom, there can be allergy triggers anywhere. Even those fun classroom parties can be a potential concern, depending on the severity of the food allergies. Here are some tips and tricks to help your child get through the school year safely.
Communication Is Key
Make sure that teachers and staff know about a child’s potential food allergies. Teachers should ask at the beginning of every year and make sure they are aware of them. In the case of truly severe allergies, notices should be sent to student’s homes prior to any class parties with a list of approved and non-approved snacks to make sure everyone can have a safe and fun experience.
Many Schools Have Nut Free Tables
While not all schools do it this way, there are certain schools where kids who are allergic to nuts sit at a separate table to ensure that they are safe. Other schools do it the opposite way, and those with lunches containing nuts must sit at a special table. Kids should also be encouraged to do their best to not sit near students with certain allergies if they know they have something like almonds of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with them for lunch.
Promote Inclusivity As Much As Possible
Instead of serving snacks which can cause common allergy issues, maybe settle for safer snacks. These don’t have to be complicated at all. Pretzels, apples, and crackers are amongst many kid-friendly and parent approved healthy snacks that everyone can enjoy.
