Fall is here, which means school fundraising, team fundraising, and even more fundraising! At Claire’s Gourmet, we deal with misconceptions about fundraising every day. Here are five common misconceptions about fundraising that we bust every day.
Crowdfunding Isn’t for Everything
Crowdfunding is a very popular practice for runs, 5Ks, and other athletic events. When someone signs up, they ask their family and friends to donate to the cause. However, crowdfunding can be used to increase donations for a wide variety of fundraising event. Peer-to-peer fundraising is effective for every type of fundraiser, so don’t be afraid to dip your toes in!
Product Fundraising Is Too Expensive
One lingering fundraising misconception is that product fundraising is too expensive to raise any significant amount of money. While ordering too much product will leave you with a fundraiser that is in the red, if you pay attention and only order what is necessary, you shouldn’t have any difficulties getting great results.
Mobile Giving Isn’t Worth It
Many online donations or crowdfunding websites take a certain percentage off of the amount donated to offset the costs of credit card fees, advertising, and admin. However, optimizing your fundraiser for mobile giving is a great way to raise donation amounts. If you aren’t sure about the impact, try hosting one product fundraiser online and on paper and another one just on paper. We’ll give you a tip—do the paper fundraiser when you don’t need to raise much money.
Stay in the Box
Many schools and teams rely on fundraising methods that have been used before because they worry about the impact of switching gears and losing their results. However, switching from event fundraising to product fundraising (or vice versa) will always be a great decision with the proper planning and proper partner involved. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box.
You Don’t Really Need to Plan
This final fundraising myth is the cause of failure for many fundraisers, big and small. Proper planning is essential, and skipping the advance work will certainly lead to a fundraising fail.
